Orcas Island

Travis died in June. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer in April, and things moved impossibly fast. His last days were so purposeful, and we mourned his immediate absence, but the idea that he was gone felt so abstract. We planned an east coast memorial, and everyone gathered and shared stories. We planned a west coast memorial, and it seemed like he was everywhere. But a sense of real loss came over us as the ferry pulled away from Orcas Island a couple of weeks ago. We had just spread his ashes from the Folger’s coffee can he asked to be kept in, and we yelled his name at the top of our lungs on one of the most beautiful patches of earth I have ever seen. At his request we all dressed in 80’s clothes or ridiculous hats. He planned out his entire memorial service. He was our host.

The grief right after he died was profound. Now our daily lives have returned to their familiar routines and although not nearly as acute, the grief that simmers steadily under the surface has its own unreachable itch.

Laurie Marino - Hearing again about Travis, seeing those pictures, has me in tears. He is, was, irreplaceable…and you were so blessed, as were we all, to have known him. God bless us all, God bless Travis….let him never disappear from our hearts.October 13, 2016 – 9:16 pm

KLC - Viewing these made me cry, and I haven’t even met you, let alone Travis. Art, and your art, is a powerful thing. Sending you and your family love.October 13, 2016 – 3:23 pm

Isabella and John

Isabella and John were married at the Willowdale Estate in Topsfield. Isabella got ready at her mom’s salon in Belmont. I loved photographing amongst all the activity in a place that has so much meaning. The whole day had such a strong feeling of excitement and celebration. That was particularly true on that dance floor which was a lot of fun to document. Congratulations, Isabella and John!

Jenna and Justin

Jenna and Justin got married at the Marriott Longwharf in Boston. I wasn’t able to meet them in person before the wedding, but I quickly felt very comfortable with Jenna and Justin and all their favorite people. This was a fun one, and I’m so glad I was a part of it. Congratulations, Jenna and Justin!

Kelly and Matt

Kelly and Matt got married at Elm Bank in Wellesley. They didn’t talk about getting ready together, but it naturally ended up that way. They separated when Kelly got in her dress, and when they happened to see each other next Matt was holding a bathroom sign. The lack of orchestration made the real emotions feel more pronounced and authentic. I loved this wedding so much. Congratulations, Kelly and Matt!

Liana and Sujeet

Liana and Sujeet got married at the Stone House in Little Compton. Family, great friends, and good food. That’s what was important to Liana and Sujeet, and that’s exactly what their wedding was all about.  One of my favorite moments was when Liana spotted dogs, and the bridesmaids began to panic. They knew wearing a wedding dress wouldn’t deter Liana from getting down on their level. Congrats, Liana and Sujeet!

Kristen and Stephen

Kristen and Stephen got married at St. Margaret’s Church before heading to the Essex County Club for a beautiful reception. There was a lot of storytelling and laughing throughout the day. I’m always looking for moments and real emotion and there was no shortage of that here. Kristen and Stephen seemed so happy and excited just to be with their friends and family. Thank you for making my job so easy. Congratulations, guys!

Susan and Patrick

Susan and Patrick got married at the Omni Parker House in Boston. We had plenty of time built in to wander the city. I loved ending up at Cafe Vittoria for a quick espresso. Caffeine and wedding day adrenaline pair well. Susan and Patrick were easy to work with, and I loved being around them and their friends and family. They were calm and present during the day and once Booty Vortex opened the dance floor another side of the crowd came out. Patrick literally put on his dancing shoes. Congratulations, Susan and Patrick!

Michele and Erik

I got on a boat for Michele and Erik’s wedding. Michele and Erik got married on Thompson Island. We were close enough to admire the Boston skyline, but the serenity and quiet of the island made it feel like a different planet. Michele and Erik were so easy to work with. They just seemed so happy to be with their friends and family and, of course, each other. Thank you to Mandy for making everything move along so effortlessly (even while she battled raccoons behind the scenes), and thank you to Michele and Erik for such an awesome day across the harbor. Congratulations, guys!

Emily and Jake

Lawn games at weddings aren’t uncommon, but I think this might be the first wedding I can think of where they were the main event. Emily and Jake’s Old Manse wedding stripped away all the distractions from the reception so nothing took away from people’s ability to eat, drink, talk, laugh . . . and play Kan Jam. It was one of those weddings where I wish I was a guest. And the playlist they put together is one of the best I’ve ever heard. Jake, can you export a list of the songs for me? Congratulations, guys!

Ellis Does Summer

Every day we leave for school Ellis checks to see if anymore of our shriveled strawberry’s have turned red. He replanted a weed I pulled so we water that when it looks thirsty even though the rest of our plants are woefully neglected. Ellis doesn’t discriminate between shorebreak and pools. He loves water in its many forms. When time allows we’ve been eating our breakfast on the front porch to study squirrel habits and wave at neighbors. There’s a dentist appointment on the calendar so we need to slow our consumption of ice cream and popsicles. Not sure if that’s a seasonal thing or if it’s just the way we live now. Regardless, please don’t go. We love you, Summer.
