Winner: Best of 2008

The people have spoken. I’m excited to announce that Erin and Dan are the Best of 2008 contest winners!  They’ll soon be dining at Salts in Cambridge with their $150 gift certificate.  Thanks to everyone who weighed in.  Over 1700 votes were cast.

And, of course, thanks to all the beautiful couples who invited me to be a part of their weddings last year.  It was a tremendous pleasure and an honor. Thank you.

The Wolf Tree

My friend Elizabeth came into Boston on a northeasterly wind and left as quickly as she arrived.  We had brunch, and we went wandering for a spell before she continued her journey south.

If you need another case for “it’s the photographer, not the camera”, check out her beautiful pictures and words: thewhales.blogspot.com.  It doesn’t matter how fancy your camera is if you can’t “see”.

baby carriage

My sister swung through Brookline the other day in search of a new car seat for my ever-expanding nephew. She needed to give her full attention to picking the safest, best-fitting, and most stylish (cow print) car seat. So, I kept an eye on little man.

I never realized how many friends you can make with a baby. Lots of nice people waved and smiled on our stroll. I could never get that kind of respect on my own.

Brooke - So cute! :)March 29, 2009 – 2:18 pm

Dawn and Scott

I had a wonderful time wandering around with Dawn and Scott last week for their engagement photos. We walked  around Southie with the pups before exploring the side streets of the North End. We had no itinerary or direction in mind. Getting a little lost often leads to the best, most surprising photos. However, we did make a b-line to LuLu’s Bake Shoppe before returning to the car. As hard as I might try, I can never seem to leave the North End without one of their butter-cream frosted cupcakes.

Thanks for a wonderful evening, Dawn and Scott. Can’t wait for the wedding!

Channing - Thanks, Geneve!April 20, 2009 – 9:03 pm

Geneve - Great work, your engagement photos really give the viewer a sense of who the couple is. Nice use of the city as a backdrop and love the photo with the graffiti hearts. Also love the use of street lights too! Good luck this year!April 20, 2009 – 8:58 pm

Channing - That’s great, Dawn! If you have an extra one, please send it along. I’d love to see how it looks (Don’t worry, I already have the date saved : )April 8, 2009 – 2:56 pm

Dawn - We just ordered our save-the-dates (I know we don’t need to mail them till July, but I couldn’t wait!) – it was so hard choosing just one photo. I made 4 or 5 different samples with different photos before ordering! We ended up going with the one of us leaning against the brick wall looking at each other (#92)- sweet, simple, and we both look cute! My mom loves it – she’s using it as her computer wallpaper, actually. Can’t wait to get them – thanks again for a great evening, not only did the pictures come out great, we had a ton of fun!April 8, 2009 – 2:52 pm

lisa - I like the street and graffiti locations. Nice!March 27, 2009 – 4:52 pm

Love and Editing

So far Brooke and I have put together an album for every one of our three years together. This is usually a painful experience as I dominate the process with my tyrannical editing practices. We’ve never finished a book without at least one of us crying.

I’ve softened up a little over the years, however. It’s ok if not every picture tells a story. Sometimes narrative takes a back seat to a record of how cute you looked.

Nothing wrong with that.

Steven - This is an awesome tradition! We have plenty of pictures on hard drives and in binders that don’t get touched. I make plenty of albums for everyone else. Your post helps me realize that I need to make my own.March 27, 2009 – 8:31 am

timg - I love this idea Channing. Jenn and I do a very similar thing except it’s a little multimedia piece. A print book sounds fantastic though.

As for editing you can never go wrong with cute just don’t let anyone back at Mizzou know. :)March 21, 2009 – 1:34 pm

Sara - NOW you are ready to get married. You’ve demonstrated through your annual photo project, that you have learned the lessons of compromise in a relationship. Can’t wait to toast to it officially. . .soon. Love, Your Domineering Older Sister.March 20, 2009 – 8:16 am

Courtney - Channing-

I’m not getting married yet, I’m not engaged, I’m not even in a relationship; but I would like to book you now for my wedding…whenever it will be. I’ve been following your work for a few months and I just want to say how beautiful your shots are. I greatly admire your work and the couples who have had you as their photographer are very lucky to have found you.

Orange Juice

YoonTravis, and I recently took advantage of the flexible day-time schedule photography careers have provided us. We met up at Victoria’s Diner and talked a little shop.  If you’re looking for a place to serve you grits in Boston, Victoria’s is another option. Travis, a North Carolina native, said they were pretty darn good, too.

Brunch

My sister, brother-in-law, and nephew stopped by for a wonderful brunch yesterday. They brought delights from A&J King in Salem, and we feasted, gossiped, relaxed and watched the little one show off his crawling skills. The weather was warm enough to keep the windows opened and for Brooke to wear her Spring apron.

However, I think we were just being teased that winter is actually over.

Contest: Best of 2008

I got to know some wonderful people last year in the process of bearing witness to some beautiful weddings.

I recently went back into my archive and selected a favorite moment from each wedding.  To make things fun, the couple whose image receives the most votes from blog readers will win a $150 gift certificate to Salts in Cambridge, MA.

This process wasn’t easy.  I have several favorites from each wedding.  In the end, I simply picked the moments that resonated with me the most.  Not every image has a bride or groom in it. Not every image will be the couple’s favorite.  But each is a moment I personally felt connected to the celebration, transition, and love around me.

You can cast your vote at the bottom of this post.

Fine print: The images are in order of date. Image numbers and names are below the corresponding photos. Out-of-state winners, and those who prefer, can opt for a $150 American Express gift card instead of the Salts gift certificate.  The voting will end at 11:59 p.m. EST on Tuesday March 31, 2009.

Put your friends and family to work, and get voting!

Brea and Nathan

Nathan and I know a lot of the same people.  We both went to the University of Missouri at the same time, and Nathan’s current roommate is one of my high school classmates.  But, it was Brea and my fiancee who met first when Brooke chose Brea to do her wedding-day make-up.  Brea and Nathan are getting married exactly a month after us, so it seemed only natural to return the favor with engagement pictures.

We had a blast wandering around the city, getting drinks, changing wardrobes, and, of course, making new friends.  Nathan took the last picture (Check out that rule of thirds).

If you’re in the need of make-up for your wedding or any other event, you should get ahold of Brea.  In addition to being very professional, she’s also absolutely delightful to be around.
