My parents live outside Charlotte. Both their children and grandchildren live in Massachusetts and have never lived in Charlotte. We get to spend a week in Emerald Isle, NC with them, and since my sister and I married Yankees that means the best chance for everyone to spend Christmas morning together is if Mom and Dad come north. What I’m doing here is trying to convince myself that I’m not a bad son for letting more than four years go by since last visiting my parent’s house. Even if we see them two or three times a year it must be nice as a parent to have your children under your roof even if it was never theirs. Worse yet, my reason for being in North Carolina was to attend a workshop. I added on an extra couple of days to go to the NASCAR Hall of Fame with my mom and smoke some ribs with my dad, but I’ve got some catching up to do if I expect to be a contender for Son of the Year.

Brenna - I adore you and these people who made you.April 11, 2013 – 5:19 pm

Kate and Alec

I love starting engagement sessions in people’s homes. When you’re trying to make pictures meaningful and intimate it sure helps when that is present in every part of the frame. Kate and Alec live in Coolidge Corner, so after steeling our nerves with a beer we ventured out to explore their neighborhood. I don’t think they were trying to kill me when they took me up Summit Avenue. Regardless, I survived the steep ascent, and the pictures we took along the way were some of my favorites. My time with these two was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait for Kate and Alec’s wedding in October.

Winter

For 10 years now I’ve lived in relentlessly cold climates. I’ve heard from others about winter hobbies and their importance to get through months of ice and darkness. But I never implemented what I learned from those with snowshoes. Hunkering down and returning to the human race once you remember what grass looks like is easy to let happen. But this year I got winter hobbies, and I have to say the past few months have been pretty easy. I joined a basketball camp (yes, like the one middle schoolers go to but for adults). I also signed up for improv classes. With both these activities I learned there was an extreme lack of play in my life. I’m not just talking about relaxing or hanging out. I’m talking about losing self-awerness to live a little more viscerally.

This isn’t all to say I’m not ready for spring. As soon as it hits 55 degrees I’ll be outside working on my first sunburn. Believe that.

Mike E - Took some classes when I worked at the Improv Asylum back in the day. I’ll never forget the feeling of letting myself go and flying by the seat of my pants, shocking myself by making outlandish stories up on the spot. It was exhilarating to live, as you say, viscerally.

Happy almost-Spring.March 15, 2013 – 11:14 am

Brenna Jennings - Apparently my winter hobby was attending little kid birthday parties, and when I had some spare time I’d do a lot of nose blowing. I like your idea better.March 14, 2013 – 1:13 pm

PVD

Was this our 4th trip to Providence? I think it was. Each year a few Boston photographers head south to meet up with our Rhode Island brethren in these winter months when our schedules are more manageable (previous trips documented here and here). We always start at the RISD museum, but this year we were there for 30 min. before heading to The Eddy for drinks. I’m all for art, but this trip is about catching up (and feeling all early 20th century with our rail travel). There’s been a revolving cast of participants throughout the years, but I’m glad Stacey is a constant. We don’t get to see her nearly enough, and as soon as I walk out of the train station and see her, I know we’re in for a good time.

Goodbye

Brooke and I met in this car. Sort of. There was a three-month e-mail courtship before she picked me up at the airport and drove me to a job interview two hours away. We’ve filled up the tiny cargo space with presents and spent several Christmas mornings driving between families in this car. When the radio would stop working we sang Disney songs in this car. One of our biggest arguments was in this car. We’ve driven to the beach to eat pizza and lobster rolls and have traveled to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Connecticut and collected some of my favorite memories of the past seven years in this car. Yes, I know, emotionally attaching ourselves to a material possession is frowned upon, but the one constant variable of all these memories is this car, and it just feels a little sad to toss it aside once we’re done with it. Brooke has had the car for the past 11 years. Think of all those memories. She’s having a tough time.

Dave - Truly a sad day , i was with Brooke the night she purchased the V.W. , i can picture it stuck in a snow bank when she lived in Alston , i dilivered a snowblower to dig her outFebruary 27, 2013 – 8:04 pm

Mike E - Beautiful car, beautiful shot, beautiful story.February 27, 2013 – 7:29 pm

Mae - Awww I remember when Webby was shiny and new. But I might be the anomaly of the group since the last time I saw my Camry was on a flatbed towtruck after it overheated on 95 and I was so mad at it. Saying goodbye to the mini was much more sad, since I never wrote in sharpie in the glovebox “this car was used to film ‘The Town'” and now whoever is motoring in it now will never know. Enjoy the ‘ru you guys!February 27, 2013 – 4:44 pm

Meago - When we traded in my old Saab for the Subaru, I bawled. Several times. Marko has pictures. That car saw me through a lot…I feel ya Brooke!!February 27, 2013 – 2:49 pm

Geneve - Awwww :( I feel this way too so you are certainly not alone. I even donated one of my old cars to charity and couldn’t watch as they pulled away with my car. I also get attached to my computers & cameras. I guess there are just so many memories within these objects.February 27, 2013 – 2:14 pm

Emily - This brought a tear to my eye (OK to be fair I am 9 month pregnant!) thinking of how I felt saying good-bye to my first car. Also a VW…Loved that car and all the memories and changes I experienced with it. Good luck Brooke….the way I see it, nothing a good cry can’t help with! AND, how great to have this picture to hold on to for years to come.February 27, 2013 – 2:13 pm

Brenna - I get this. I really get it. When I found out that my first, beloved Civic hatchback that I’d sold to a friend had been stolen and stripped and left in Everett, I cried in the middle of Target. (His name was Javier.)February 27, 2013 – 1:54 pm

9tailors

I just heard we’re getting more snow. Perhaps now would be a good time to journey back towards fall, a time of year when the light is still warm and our outlook on life a little brighter. Reminders of sunshine from this 9Tailors shoot might help to carry us through March where hopefully spring will soon start its slow tease and show us one more time what the ground looks like.

katie - Love these! You capture the different sides of a man so well. Now to take my finance shopping…March 27, 2013 – 9:31 am

Ben Schaefer - Gorgeous images. Though you could have easily been one of the models as well.February 20, 2013 – 9:19 pm

Zac Wolf - Glad to see some of my friends getting in on the #menswear action.

Snow Day

The summer we moved into our house I bought a snow blower to clear the large driveway in the winter months. Well over a year went by before I had an excuse to use it, but the machine came in handy this weekend. If I never use it again I can say it was worth every penny.

Best of Twenty-Twelve

This post excludes some good, really good, and damn good moments that I’ve fallen in love with over the past year. Below are a few of the best images that worked well together in this space to quickly convey how spectacular 2012 was. I met so many great people and felt so privileged to bear witness to so many genuine and intimate moments. These photos are from Mexico, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. I kind of love my job.

Allie Zuckerman - I somehow never saw this last year! Feel so blessed that a few of your shots from my wedding are included, especially the one of me and my mother. Thanks again for all your artistry and hard work!February 10, 2014 – 3:48 pm

KLC - These images are bananas.February 27, 2013 – 1:48 pm

Andy Dowd - There’s something I really love about the bride and groom walking down the snow-covered sidewalk (is that Pilar & Aaron?), but I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe how monochromatic it is? And I also love the framing of the groom shaving. Really nice work.February 15, 2013 – 1:30 pm

carla ten eyck - just knock it off right now!!! love these so much! Each image totally sucked me in and told me a story whether I knew the real story or not.

jen - always thrilled to see what you’re up to, channing. these photos are, of course, stunning.January 26, 2013 – 3:04 pm

Sarah - 1. Martha Mary Chapel! Oh, in another lifetime I dreamed about getting married there. I haven’t been by there in years and years…seeing it was a sentimental arrow to the heart. :)

2. The church (priest, couple) shot is perfection. Every one is in the perfect position. I have to believe the moms, aunts, and assorted matriarchs *loved* that picture. As a photographer (amateur!), that’s the kind of shot I dream of taking, always.

3. That tiger jacket has to win as Best Wedding Attire Ever, In the History of Weddings.

Happy New Year, and best wishes for 2013.January 21, 2013 – 6:07 pm

Daniela - This is always my favorite post! (Besides my own wedding, of course!)January 16, 2013 – 3:16 pm

Ashley O'Dell - So, a few things. The amount of genius in some of these images should embarrass you. The champagne, the flowers and ac, the church at night, the curlers, the traffic, you get the idea, but there are many more. All incredible moments that tell the story of a wedding without saying a word.January 16, 2013 – 2:13 pm

Nina - YOU RULE.January 16, 2013 – 1:17 pm

Kelly Rashka - Channing!!! I love your work! I love the little details that you see. What a beautiful way to put a story together!!January 16, 2013 – 1:03 pm

Winter Vacation

You’ve heard me talk about it before. If you want to experience the beauty of summer’s most popular destinations it helps to go in winter. Brooke and I spent a week on Wellfleet Harbor with an incredible view on one side of us and a crackling fireplace on the other. We were lucky to have Brooke’s family join us on New Year’s Eve which was a lot of fun, even if it did make the house eerily quiet once they left. During the week we enjoyed driving around the desolate cape and parking in massive parking lots where we often were the only car. We took (quick) walks along the beach to experience the uninterrupted beauty. My favorite was chasing sunset in Provincetown. Nobody was around, and the wind was so loud you could barely hear the huge waves crashing. We didn’t last long out there, but sometimes it only takes a brief moment to make a big impact.

Pilar and Aaron

Pilar and Aaron were married at St. Ignatius with their reception at the Harvard Club on the eve of New Year’s Eve. Although the new year wasn’t technically ushered in that evening, there was still a sense of celebration and new beginnings. Many of Pilar’s family traveling from Columbia experienced snow for the first time, and Pilar and Aaron just seemed so happy to be surrounded by all their favorite people. I can’t think of a better way to close out my year than with these two on this really fun day. Congratulations, Pilar and Aaron!
