Camera Talk

For the past 10 weeks I’ve taught a photography apprenticeship at Garfield Middle School through a wonderful organization called Citizen Schools. We’ve been learning how to compose a photograph, use photography as a means of self-expression, and we also spent time thinking critically about photography and its role in our lives. On Thursday, all the Citizen Schools apprenticeships will share what they’ve learned during this fall semester. Our photography class will have a small gallery of our work, a photo booth set up, and 2012 calendars of the students’ photos for sale.

The public is welcome, and I’d particularly like to extend the invitation to other photographers. An important element of the apprenticeship is sharing what they’ve learned with an authentic audience. If you are a photographer and have the time to come and engage the kids in a discussion about their photography it would certainly mean a lot to them. You can stop by anytime between 5:00 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. this Thursday December 15th. We’ll be set up in the Garfield Middle School gymnasium. The address is 168 Garfield Avenue, Revere, MA 02151. You can even get your picture taken in our photo booth : )

And if you would like to share your professional skills with students that may not otherwise have direct access to certain career paths, I would encourage anyone to volunteer with Citizen Schools. It has been an extremely rewarding experience for me.

Aliza and Chaim

Aliza and Chaim’s wedding at the Peabody Essex Museum was full of Jewish traditions and beautiful pageantry. I had so much fun photographing this event and did my best to keep up. Every wedding takes on a different tone, and there’s no other way to describe this one than celebratory. There were multiple horn-lead processions, and the hora lasted nearly 30 min. I got swept up in the wedding and loved every minute of it. Aliza and Chaim were at Jamie and Jeremy’s wedding two years ago, and I feel lucky they invited me to be a part of theirs. Congratulations, Aliza and Chaim!

Erika and Eddie

I met Erika almost five years ago at her brother’s wedding. The fact that she even remembered me, let alone wanted me to be a part of her and Eddie’s wedding meant a lot to me. Erika and Eddie live in Brighton a few streets over from where Brooke and I lived until just a few months ago. I started the day spending time with Eddie at the house he grew up in. Erika was getting ready across the street in the house they they both live in now. They had a beautiful family-only ceremony at St. Columbkille Parish before meeting up with the rest of their guests for a fun reception along the Charles River at the Harry Parker Boathouse. Thanks so much for including me, Erika and Eddie! Congratulations!

Tim and Greg

I met up with Tim and Greg at their home in Somerville where we gave Scooter some time in the spotlight. After dropping Scooter off (so he couldn’t hijack the entire session), we wandered through Harvard Square and along Charles River as the sun went down. I had a great time getting to know Tim and Greg (and Scooter!), and I can’t wait for their wedding in June.

Kathryn and Pete

Kathryn and Pete just moved to Boston, so I didn’t even get a chance to meet them before their engagement session. It was great to get to know them as we wandered around Concord and their new neighborhood in Boston. Their wedding is next weekend at the Boston Public Library, so I won’t have to wait too long before we hangout again. Can’t wait!

Caitlin and Pete

Caitlin and Pete live in New Jersey and are getting married in Boston. But they lived in New York when they started dating, which made the city a great place for their engagement session. We visited some of their old haunts near Broadway and then the Upper West Side. Visiting a couple’s points of origin is a fast and great way to get to know someone, and I really enjoyed getting to know Caitlin and Pete. We almost did the engagement session in Boston which would have been great, but not nearly as special as this.

Nina

She’s talented. She’s prolific. She’s Nina. She seems to always be around the most interesting people in the most interesting places and then make the most interesting pictures. And the pictures aren’t interesting just because of the subjects but because of the way she sees the subjects. It was great to catch up on my recent trip to NYC. We were partners in our studio lighting class in college. Neither of us use studio lighting.

Andrea and AJ

Andrea and AJ live in New York, so traveling to explore the places important to them only made sense. Four years have passed since I was last in New York City, and I had so much fun wandering around different neighborhoods with Andrea and AJ. They were great tour guides and great company. We started in the West Village, made a short stop in Central Park and continued on to Brooklyn for the sunset. I had a great time getting to know these two in their natural habitat. I can’t wait for their wedding in Boston next summer!

Tess and Jared

You’ve heard me talk about being nervous shooting other photographers weddings, but I was particularly anxious about Tess and Jared’s. I looked up to Jared when I quit my job and came to Boston to freelance. I am still constantly in awe of his work. If working with one highly visually literate person wasn’t enough, Tess is also an artist and talented designer. Luckily, Tess and Jared, and all their friends and family, were so warm and welcoming that I forgot to second guess myself. The ceremony and reception were at the Riverside Farm in Vermont. The rain was courteous enough to fall only when it didn’t matter. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a beautiful fall day. Congratulations, Tess and Jared!
