Scenes from a Staycation

Sometimes you just need a new set of walls. A place where your stresses aren’t piled up on the dining room table or sitting in your empty refrigerator. Brooke and I stayed a night at XV Beacon on Saturday and got an injection of happiness in our snow-covered, poorly-lit winter lives. Someone should have prescribed this to us long ago: 24 hours of towel-warmers, soft pillows, eco-unfriendly shower heads, an amazing meal, and season 3, disc 2 of Dexter. I don’t even care it’s snowing again right now. How do you like that?

Elizabeth and Patrick

Elizabeth and Patrick live in St. Louis. So, we got together for their engagement session while they were in town for Christmas. Since the city had record snowfall two days prior, we did the whole session at the Boston College Club, the site for their wedding reception in June. I hadn’t had the privilege of meeting Patrick beforehand so it was great to spend time with them both before the wedding. I’m really looking forward to working with them again. And not just because of the beautiful views and remarkable location : )

Elizabeth and Joe

Elizabeth and Joe’s wedding was my last of 2010, and I can’t think of a better way to close out the year. I really enjoyed getting to know the two during their engagement session this summer and felt lucky to be a part of their winter wedding at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. There’s just something about Christmas lights at dusk. Congratulations, Elizabeth and Joe! Thanks so much for inviting me to be a part of such a beautiful day.

Sara and John

A plus to being a wedding photographer is that once a week I renew my wedding vows. Brooke doesn’t know that, but I always take to heart the reminders to treat commitment as a daily choice. I’ve seen many beautiful ceremonies and even dropped a tear at one or two (the air was a little dry if I remember), but Sara and John’s wedding is among the ones that resonated the most. Elly, their celebrant, asked John, “Will you ever cause Sara pain?” John answered, “I may.” Elly then asked him “Will you intend to?” And John answered, “No.” Elly asked the same thing of Sara and a handful of other questions that honored the realities and beauty of long-term relationships. After their intimate ceremony in XV Beacon’s wine cellar, all 12 guests went up to Sara and John’s suite for a toast before heading back down for dinner at Moo. Congratulations, Sara and John!

Abey and Greg

I love winter weddings. And I really loved Abey and Greg’s December wedding at the Willowdale Estate in Topsfield. Abey and Greg were excited about the vegetarian menu (absolutely delicious, by the way) and the band (made up of friends, including a groomsman on drums), and I was blown away by both (Especially the band. I wish I could describe it). Their friends and family were so welcoming and funny and interesting and made this wedding so special to be a part of. Congratulations, Abey and Greg! Thanks again for letting me be there.

Three Thanksgivings

Brooke and I had three Thanksgivings this year. All within a week. We started with the Stonehill Thanksgiving that is a gathering of Brooke’s college friends and one of the highlights of my year. This year the host, Kate, wrote a toast on the back of her wedding invitations from three years ago. It was really sweet. The very next day we went to our friends Zev and Maureen’s house for their “Friendsgiving”. We had a great time with all their charming friends and ate some of the best bird I’ve ever tasted. It was the first turkey they ever made! And then there was the always-special Thanksgiving at Brooke’s dad’s house. It’s where an impossible amount of food ends up being just enough. I always get a good feeling walking in and seeing all the crock pots lined up.

I Can’t wait for Christmas. We have at least two of those planned.
